I thought of Desdemona immediately when I saw this beautiful hand painted strawberry charm which evokes the embroidered handkerchief that causes so much anguish in Verdi’s opera. The heart charm represents the beautiful love duet shared between Otello and Desdemona under a moonlit sky at the end of Act 1. The leaf charm symbolizes the famous, mournful “Willow Song”. Creamy pearls indicate Desdemona’s innocence and the bridal gown she wishes to be buried in; Black beads represent her dark fate. Clear glass hearts and teardrops evoke the themes of love and tragedy.
