Goethe's tragic tale, "The Sorrows of Young Werther," is retold by Massenet as a devastating romantic opera. Werther, a sensitive poet, loves Lotte; unfortunately, she marries someone else, even though she truly loves him. Unable to live without her, he commits suicide - releasing himself and her from their love.
